Inishmurray

The remote and mystical Island of Inishmurray, four miles from the coast of Sligo, is renowned for its preservation as an early Christian site, for its wild scenery and as a wildlife sanctuary. St Molaise founded a Christian Monastery here in the 6th century, the remains of which are remarkably intact to this day.

The island was attacked by vikings and many of the buildings were destroyed in 807 A.D. The local population peaked at just over 100 in the 1880s but the last residents moved to the mainland on 12th November 1948. Some of the buildings are still visible including 15 houses and the island's only school. The site remained a pilgrimage destination right up to recent times.
